Conservative Clean Sweep In Portsmouth North

Last week political history was made in Portsmouth after local Conservatives won 7 out of 7 Council seats in Portsmouth North. Making gains from both Labour and the Liberal Democrats, Portsmouth voters came out in their droves to vote for change and in support of the radical proposals put forward by Portsmouth Conservatives.

Conservative Group Leader, Steve Wemyss said, "The fantastic results mean that the Conservatives are at their highest level in Portsmouth for over 20 years and are now the joint largest party on the City Council. In the light of how evenly balanced the Council now is, we proposed working with the Liberal Democrats in order that the best interest of the City was put first and that stability was achieved. It was very disappointing that for political reasons, they decided to reject the offer and cobble together a coalition with 2 ex-Labour Independants. But also they rejected the will of Portsmouth residents who, quite obviously wanted the change we were offering them, after we won the popular vote across Portsmouth as a whole."
